F5-07·F5 — Brand Strategy

Distinctiveness vs. Differentiation: The Core Tension

The productive tension

Distinctiveanddifferentiated

relative, not unique

The synthesis

Distinctiveness (being recognised) and relative differentiation (being perceived as different) are complementary, not opposing strategies. Sharp is right that uniqueness is rare and unnecessary. Aaker is right that relative differentiation still drives brand preference. You need both.

Learning objectives

  • Define distinctiveness and differentiation precisely
  • Explain Sharp's critique of differentiation
  • Explain why Aaker's differentiation still matters
  • Articulate the Both/And synthesis — relative differentiation
  • Apply the distinctiveness-differentiation framework to brand audits
  • Understand why "unique" is the wrong standard for differentiation
