Buying group

buying committee · DMU · decision making unit

The buying group is the collective that decides a business purchase together: users, budget holders, procurement, IT, legal and the internal champion pulling the proposal. In larger purchases such a group quickly counts six to ten people, each with their own criteria and their own risks. That changes the marketing job fundamentally: the message must not convince one decision-maker but enable consensus between roles that barely talk to each other. Being known to everyone in the group therefore outweighs scoring deeply with one contact; the biggest deal risk in B2B is the stakeholder who does not know the brand.
