Brand building and activation

brand building · activation

Brand building and activation are the two complementary mechanisms through which marketing communication works. Brand building works broad and emotional, builds memory structures among future buyers and pays out over years in pricing power and structural market share. Activation works narrow and rational, targets people in the market right now and produces immediately measurable response that decays quickly. The classic research insight is that the two need each other: activation harvests what brand building has sown. Steering only by short-term response slowly hollows out the brand; only building leaves revenue on the table. Splitting budget across the two is therefore a core decision of any communications strategy.
