Andrew Ehrenberg

Ehrenberg · Ehrenberg-Bass

Andrew Ehrenberg (1926-2010) laid the statistical foundation under marketing's empirical school. His life's work was finding law-like patterns in buying behaviour that replicate across categories, countries and decades, with the NBD-Dirichlet model as its crown: one model predicting purchase frequencies, brand choice and loyalty figures from market share. Double jeopardy is his best-known discovery. Ehrenberg's methodological legacy matters as much as his results: first establish patterns that replicate, only then theorise. The institute named after him and Robert Bass continued that programme and, through Byron Sharp, carried it into marketing practice.
